Question and Answer with Dennis Warner

(#2 of 14)

Q: "Describe your guitar playing style?"

DW:   I use two different “styles”. First, I love to finger pick. For years I tried to use those metal picks on my fingers, but just couldn’t find the dexterity to make them work. Then, in the early 1980’s, Michael Johnson showed me how he had grown out his fingernails on his right hand and used those as his fingerpicks. Wow!
That was the ticket for me. I added a plastic thumb pick to even out the sound
and have been using that system ever since.

I also use a flat pick, particularily with the twelve string. When I use a flat pick,
it’s a very percussive way of playing, developed from years of being a solo artist. As a kid, I wanted to play the drums in the band but they had too many drummers.
I guess now I take it out on the guitar!
